WELCOME TO WALTER
REDONDO'S WEBSITE
When standing before one of Walter Redondo’s paintings, one
might well be reminded of the words of the Renaissance philosopher Michel de
Montaigne: “Every man carries within him the form of all humanity.”
As an abstract expressionist who has been primarily
self-taught, Walter Redondo’s earliest artistic influences are Joan
Mitchell, Cy Twombly, Willem DeKooning, and Robert Motherwell. In his work,
one can identify touches of DeKooning’s palette, of Motherwell’s literate
spatial sense, Twombly’s use of calligraphic line and marking, and also his
rich,
creamy colors and open areas of canvas.
It was Joan Mitchell, However, who clearly had the greatest
artistic influence on him:
“Joan Mitchell had a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art,
in La Jolla, when I was about twenty years old. I was literally stunned by
her work, the size of her canvases and the way she used color. It seemed to
me that her imagery could transport a person to a place of such deep
involvement that they would be completely swept away by the sheer emotion of
the work. It’s difficult to put accurately in words, but I felt that in her
work I was being allowed to see the truest expression of her heart and
soul.”
Nearly three decades hence, we look at Walter Redondo’s work
and see an artist who has grown into a style distinctly his own. And like
the late Joan Mitchell, Walter Redondo is an artist who completely bares his
soul through his work. It is this central element of his artistic
explorations that makes the artworks so unique and fulfilling. Walter
Redondo’s paintings and sculpture are true visions of hope, love, struggle,
family, and community. Each unique piece represents a singular moment in one
man’s journey, reflecting the complexity of human existence, the universal
search for harmony and balance, and the driving force to understand and
commune with the divine.
Walter Redondo’s paintings are thoughtfully organized,
immersive images that are saturated with striking color. They may often
contain an allegorical theme that links one to another, or a connected
vision that over time produces an expanded series such as his “Exodus”
paintings. These canvases consist of semi-figurative works that chronicle
the interaction, struggle and small triumphs of people moving forward
together through life.
The artist has a fascination for textures and a natural
understanding of spatial relationships. His multilayered imagery is dramatic
and fascinating, and has a lyrical sense of complex interplay of color,
shape, and line. However, the essence of his paintings is not found in the
use of sophisticated techniques, but rather in the fact that one does not so
much view his images as directly take part in them. Viewers feel an
invitation to interact, to add themselves into the unfolding vision.
Walter Redondo has matured into a gifted painter who speaks
to us from the depths of his being. Each of his stunning paintings and
sculptures represents a window opening out onto a unique artistic vision.
