Walter Redondo, a native of San Diego born in 1958, has lived a life defined by both athletic excellence and artistic expression. Before establishing himself as a respected contemporary painter, Redondo achieved international recognition as one of the nation’s top tennis players. Ranked the number one junior in the United States, he went on to compete at the highest levels of the sport, including appearances at Wimbledon, and has been honored in both the Hall of Champions and the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments on the court.

After years of traveling the world as a tennis professional, Redondo felt a deep calling to return to the creative passion that had always been part of his life: painting. He began drawing as a child, and though self-taught, he carried a natural sensitivity and instinct for line, movement, and composition. In 1998, he emerged onto the local art scene, where his dynamic, abstract works quickly set him apart.

Deeply influenced by the great post-war abstract painters — Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, and Joan Mitchell among them — Redondo embraced a style that fused expressive brushwork with emotional resonance. His paintings are known for their fluid gestures, layered textures, and the way they explore themes of resilience, transformation, and human connection — a reflection of both his personal journey and his athletic discipline.

Over the past two decades, Redondo’s work has been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions across the country and is held in numerous private collections worldwide. He continues to paint daily in his San Diego studio, where he pushes the boundaries of abstraction with new series and large-scale works.

In 2024, Walter and his gallery were honored by San Diego Magazine as Best Painter and Best Gallery, a recognition of both his artistry and the cultural impact of the Walter Redondo Fine Art Collection. His life story — from his rise in the tennis world to his transition into the art world — has inspired the upcoming PBS and KPBS documentary Love All, premiering on Hulu, which explores his journey of perseverance, creativity, and reinvention.

Today, Walter Redondo remains a singular figure whose career bridges two worlds. His legacy as both a champion athlete and a celebrated painter reflects his enduring commitment to excellence and his ability to transform passion into purpose.
